A Sweet Vacation in the Outer Banks

February 18th, 2010

If you are looking for a home to rent for an Outer Banks vacation, you better do some extensive homework on what is available and how much it’s going to cost because some of the prices can be exorbitant.  But if where you’re renting is more important than the price, there are a great many such places that you can call home for as long as you can afford, and they aren’t too shabby looking.  Carolina Designs Realty has many such listings.  You can pay for atmosphere, get right up on the beach and have as much privacy as you want and need.  I’ve heard that it is a great place to have a vacation but have actually never been there myself.

A Great Florida Town to Visit

January 25th, 2010

Coming from Florida, I am pretty familiar with almost every town there.  I’ve swam and fished in many different parts of the ocean, on the east coast and the west coast.  I can say with all honesty that a town called Destin is one of the prettiest places in Florida.  It’s not your place for camping but just the opposite.  The destin condos are opulent and lush, the water is sparkling blue and emerald, and the nightlife and shopping make this a really nice place to visit for a vacation or even just a weekend.  Many towns on the beach like to advertise that their place is the best.  But as a former Floridian I can express the personal opinion that it does not get much better than Destin.

Becoming a Medical Assistant – Online

October 3rd, 2009

Well now that so many businesses are closing, or have closed; here is a suggestion for a new career.  Yes it requires education, but the benefits far outweigh the small cost involved.  You could be a Medical Assistant by attending medical assistant training school and did I mention, you can do almost all of it online?  This diploma program has a clinical portion, which means you must work at a specific place under supervision.  Of course, you wouldn’t want it any other way.  Go to Allied Health Institute dot edu for more information.

Finding Life Insurance that Won’t Break the Bank

July 21st, 2009

Lately I’ve been looking around for insurance and usually this involves getting a life insurance quote from various companies.  Naturally I am doing this online because this is the easiest way to do it but not always the best way.  However, I’m never sure what company to look for, so I visit sites that offer to find an insurance company for me.  Wholesale Insurance dot net is one place that a person could look, but not if they use tobacco.  They have no classes for tobacco users, and they have four different categories for people looking for life insurance.  These classes state things like minor health problems, length of time not smoking, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, cardiac conditions etc as qualifiers.  A few days ago I was looking around for some life insurance for my husband and I don’t know if I dreamed this or if it were real, but the figures were up close to $800.  It really pays to look around and get quotes from different sources.  But here’s one you can start with.

The Best LCD tv’s

July 3rd, 2009

Do you have a LCD TV? If you don’t then you are among what is becoming a very small minority of Americans who don’t.  And if you think that TVs can do nothing but show TV then you haven’t been keeping up with them.  Did you know that you can get a RSS feed right on your television?  Yeah, imagine that.  Some LCD TVs have a ratio that would blow your mind too.  How about 80000:1?  Uhhuh.  Go to Buy dot com and check out their tv’s and then go to any other place and comparison shop prices.  But don’t forget to compare what is offered on each TV.  All TVs are not alike.

Chocolate Chip Cookies like the ones you find in specialty shops

May 20th, 2009

Oh boy oh boy.  Here’s a wonderful recipe for chewy chocolate cookies.  Don’t be misled by how the batter looks either; these cookies turn out just great!

Active Time: 20 Minutes
Total Time: 1 Hour 30 Minutes
Yield: about 45 cookies

RECIPE INGREDIENTS
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 large egg whites
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped and melted (see Tip)

Tip:
Two foolproof ways to melt chocolate: Bring 1 inch of water to a simmer in a double boiler set over medium-high heat, then place chocolate in the top pan. (Alternatively, to improvise a double boiler, place chocolate in a heat-safe mixing bowl that fits snugly over a pan with 1 inch of simmering water). Stir until half the chocolate has melted. Remove the bowl and continue stirring until the chocolate has fully melted. Cool for 5 minutes at room temperature.

Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on High for 1 minute. Stir well, then continue microwaving in 30-second increments on High until two-thirds of the chocolate has melted, stirring well after each heating. Remove the bowl and continue stirring until all the chocolate has melted. Cool for 5 minutes at room temperature.

Enhancements: Stir 2/3 cup raisins, dried cherries or dried blueberries into the Chewy Chocolate Cookies batter along with the flour mixture. Or use 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts.

DIRECTIONS
Position rack in the center of the oven; preheat to 350° F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Whisk all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Beat egg whites in a large bowl with an electric mixer until foamy, about 1 minute. Beat in granulated sugar in a slow, steady stream. Scrape down the sides, then beat in brown sugar 1 tablespoon at a time. Beat until smooth, about 3 minutes. Beat in vanilla and melted chocolate. Stir in the dry ingredients with a wooden spoon until just incorporated.

Drop the batter by tablespoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheet, 1 1/2 inches apart.

Bake the cookies until flat yet springy, with slightly cracked tops, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Let the pan cool for a few minutes before baking another batch; replace parchment paper if torn or scorched.

Need Softball Awards?

April 3rd, 2009

I have a nephew who coaches little league softball and of course he always needs  softball trophies. A good place to find these is at QuickTrophy.  QuickTrophy has all of the usual types of trophies to hand out such as ribbons, medals, dogtags, and many different kinds of regular trophies to choose from.  And of course they have trophies for other sports as well.  Instead of handing out the same old trophy season after season, look through their awards and choose something different each year.  The same old trophies year after year has got to get old after a while.

Economic Depression and How to Overcome It

March 30th, 2009

It’s been two weeks since I last seriously read the news; family life having kept me pretty busy; and yesterday I happened to notice that shootings had taken place in several locations.  This led to consideration of the fact that the poor economy most likely was responsible for these murders.  The nursing home murders are especially heinous as it appears that someone thought that our elderly needed to be cleared out so as to cease being a burden on the working class of this country.  If that were the case, then all of us baby boomers would be in physical jeopardy each and every day.  This thinking led me to wonder about the Great Depression of the 30’s, the effects mostly, but escalated into reading about the effects of the depression on countries around the world.  Imagine my shock to discover that Japan was scarcely touched by the depression and in fact, seemed to prosper.

I went to Wikipedia for this information.  It said that Japan countered the Great Depression by evaluation of their dollar and stimulus spending.  Businesses flourished and replaced other countries products as they were so much lower in price.  While in the US families were homeless and hungry and had to depend either on the generosity of strangers or what little they could receive from the government programs.  Why can’t the US do the same thing?  I am not an economist as you can tell and history was never my strong suit at High School.  But it does tend to make me wonder, if they could do it, why couldn’t we?

Too Expensive Outdoor Furniture

February 20th, 2009

outdoor setI’ve been keeping my eyes open for some outdoor furniture for my new apartment, only when it starts turning colder the stores no longer offer them.  This has been very aggravating to me as I would have liked a set way back in November.  I should have known to check online, but honestly it just did not occur to me.  Yeah, its like that at times, these senior moments come and go and they are so frustrating.  Anyway, I found this set at a place called Cozy Days.  This particular set is priced at $2,499.00 and this is after a $401 dollar discount.  This outdoor furniture is high in quality and you couldn’t ask for better.  Take a look at their selections for your next outdoor furniture set.
